Accelerated Certification & Alternate Route Certification
Accelerated Certification Program
Students who successfully complete the Accelerated Certification Program are eligible to receive Idaho State University recommendation for the Idaho Standard Secondary Certificate. Students eligible for certification in Idaho will also meet reciprocity standards of many other states.

Summer Semester

- EDUC 301 Inquiring, Thinking, Knowing
- EDUC 302 Motivation and Management
- SPED 350 Creating Inclusive Classrooms
Fall Semester
- EDUC 309 Instructional Planning, Delivery, and Assessment
- EDUC 311 Instructional Technology
- EDUC 401 Language and Literacy
Spring Semester
- EDUC 496 Secondary Education: Student Teaching Internship
- EDUC 496 Professional Seminar
Additional coursework in the teaching major and/or minor may be required by state certification standards. Candidates have the option of submitting a portfolio detailing the competencies they possess in order to receive full or partial credit for required courses. Students also need a BA in one area of Arts and Sciences.
Requirements for Admission to the Accelerated Certification Program
- Completion of a bachelor’s degree
- 2.75 overall grade point average
- (Introduction to Computer Systems) or Concurrent enrollment or equivalent Competency
Additional Requirements for Admission to the Teacher Education Program
1. Grade of B or higher in at least two of the following areas with a grade no lower than C in any of the three areas:
ENGL 101 (English Composition)
COMM 101 (Principles of Speech)
Math 123 (Mathematics in Modern Society) or 127 (Language of Math) or 160 (Brief Calculus) or 170 (Calculus) or 253 (Introduction to Statistics)
2. Minimum scores on the Praxis I: Reading = 172; Writing = 174; Mathematics = 169. (GRE scores may be considered as a substitution for the Praxis I)
3. Grade of C or higher in EDUC 201 (Development and Individual Differences)
4. Submission of Professional Portfolio entries completed in EDUC 201
5. Evaluation forms from EDUC 201 instructor and cooperating teacher
6. Signed affidavit indicating awareness of Idaho Certification requirements
7. Successful completion of the Admission Interview
Alternate Route Certification
The Alternative Route program provides an alternative for individuals to become certificated teachers in Idaho without following a standard teacher education program. Individuals who are currently employed as para-educators, individuals who are currently certificated to teach but who are in need of emergency certification in another area, and individuals with strong subject matter background but limited experience with educational methodology shall follow the alternate certification requirements provided herein.
Semester Sequence:
Summer #1: Core—6 credits
Fall #1: Pedagogy/Core—6 credits
Spring #1: Core/Pedagogy/Content—6 credits
Summer #2: Pedagogy/Content—6 credits
Fall #2: Pedagogy/Content & Internship—6 credits
Spring #2: Content & Internship—6 credits
Summer #3: Content & Internship—6 credits
