Praxis & ICLA Assessments
Praxis I ®
The Praxis I tests are measures of basic literacy skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. They are pre-professional skills tests that are used to determine whether teacher candidates possess the academic skills needed for program entry and career success.
Tests are given at the ISU Counseling and Testing Center, which is located in Graveley Hall, Building 15, Room 351. The tests given at the Pocatello center are computer-based only. There are only 4 stations, so sign up early.
The test can be taken once per calendar month and no more than 6 times within a 12-month period. The ISU testing center is open daily, Monday – Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., based on availability. The schedule for summer hours may vary. Call ahead to insure access: (208) 282-2130.
To register, visit the Educational Testing Service (ETS) online or call the toll free line at 1-800-853-6773. When registering, payment for test(s) must be made with a credit card. If problems are encountered when registering, contact the ISU Counseling and Testing Center at (208) 282-2130.
Two options are available for completing the Praxis I:
- Option 1: Take one section at a time / Two hours allowed per section / Cost $160.00. Retakes: Cost $80.00 to retake 1 section, $120 to retake 2 sections.
- Option 2: Take all sections at once / 4 ½ hours allowed / Cost $130.00. Retakes: Cost $80.00 to retake 1 section, $120 to retake 2 sections.
Unofficial reading and math scores will be received immediately. All other official scores will be mailed within 3-4 weeks. For faster results, contact ETS directly and scores can be provided for $30.
Tests are administered at the College of Southern Idaho (CSI) in the Gerald R. Meyerhoeffer Building on the 2nd floor. Tests at the CSI Center are paper-based only and are offered at limited times.
Praxis I tests are only given a few times per year in Twin Falls. THERE IS NO TESTING IN JULY. Call for details: (208) 732-6532.
Register by phone at (866) 387-8602 or on-line at the Educational Testing Service website. Registrants will need to sign up for an account. After account registration is complete, the test selection can be accessed. Choose the Praxis 1 PPST Mathematics, Reading, and/or Writing.
The cost is $40 per section.
Official scores will be mailed within 3-4 weeks. For faster results contact ETS directly and scores can be provided for $30.
Minimum scores needed to pass the Praxis I are:
- Math 169
- Reading 172
- Writing 174

Study and preparation are strongly encouraged for the Praxis I test. A study guide can be purchased at the ISU Bookstore, Barnes & Noble, or online through Educational Testing Service or Amazon.com. General information and study tips can be found on the ETS website. The College of Education Student Advising Center and the ISU Center for Teaching and Learning (Student Success Center) can also help with the writing portion.
NOTE: First time Praxis I scores that do not meet the minimum score requirement must be retaken. Second time Praxis I scores that do not meet minimum requirements must schedule an appointment with an advisor in the Student Advising Center to discuss options.
