Book
Signing by Dr. Klug & Dr. Pemberton
A book signing by two ISU College of Education professors will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 6 in the ISU Bookstore located on the lower level of the Pond Student Union Building. Signing copies of their books will be Dr. Beverly Klug, co-author of Widening the Circle: Culturally Relevant Pedagogy for American Indian Children, and Dr. Cynthia Pemberton, author of More Than a Game: One Woman’s Fight for Gender Equity in Sport. The book signing is being held in conjunction with the bookstore’s ISU faculty and staff appreciation day and refreshments will be available. The books, though on vastly different topics, share a common thread: both have social justice as an underlying theme. Equity Education Action Project Interview Data Analyses
Do you remember? All ISU College of Education (COE) faculty were interviewed
on your perceptions on diversity education during last school year for
the COE Diversity Committee Equity
Education Action Project. The collected interview data are being analyzed
by our committee members. It is devised that each member reads and rereads
the data to note the emerging theme codes relative to the project purpose.
Then the committee will discuss the independent analysis results and try
to reach consensus on those themes. It is planned that the research project
report can be finalized for release in March 2003.
A new link has been posted on the College of Education Diversity Committee
Web site leading to the
collection of online directories listing diversity groups in ISU and IdahoThe purpose of the research project is two-fold: (a) To identify where, within the COE curriculum, diversity education currently resides, and (b) To develop a teaching and learning resource anthology targeted to prospective and practicing K-12 educators, that presents student activities and projects that promote Knowledge, Understanding, Attitude and Skill relative to social justice, multiculturalism and diversity in education. Updates on Diversity Committee Web Site As shown from the committee members page, Ms. Lori Head, instructor in the Department of Sport Science, Physical Education, and Dance, and Rafael S. Cde Baca Jr., student majoring in elementary special education, have recently joined our committee. Rafael has been elected President of The Student Council for Exceptional Children Executive Committee. Also, welcome to visit the Web page on the committee activity themes and charts for the activities that are going on with the committee. American
Indian/Alaska Native Heritage Month
President George W. Bush has proclaimed November 2002 as National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month. The theme of this year's observance is "Honoring Life, Honoring Elders, Honoring Heritage." This heritage month was first proclaimed by the first George Bush Administration in 1990. Idaho is among the 19 states where the American Indian and Alaska Native population as a proportion of the total population exceeded the national average of 1.5 percent, according to Census 2000. Alaska (19 percent), Oklahoma (11 percent) and New Mexico (10 percent) had the highest rates. The first ever “Indigenous Resources Forum” featuring speakers from the Shoshone-Bannock tribal government was held on Nov. 22 in ISU Pond Student Union Building Ballroom. Also ISU will celebrate next Native American Awareness Week during March 30 - April 6, 2003. Education World offers 12 lessons to help students learn about Native American history and cultures, including activities that involve students in dramatizing folktales, learning new words, preparing traditional foods, and much more... WWW Virtual Library - American Indians is an online index of Native American resources on the Internet, which are categorized into Culture, Indigenous Languages, History, Archaeology, Education, Legality, Health, Artists, Museums, Music, Book, Bibliographies, Tribal Gaming, Government, Commerce, Job Notices and much more... Links to American history relating to Native Americans at the National Library Information System Web site is an officially managed online resource in this regard.
