Literacy Program

Graduate course requirements include the following:

Required Professional Studies:
            EDUC 601: Research and Writing
            EDUC 602: Theories of Learning
            EDUC 610: Applied Educational Statistics
            EDUC: 616: Integration of Technology into School Curriculum

Specialty Studies:
EDUC 519: Developmental Literacy
Instructional strategies for reading, emphasizing early literacy and language development, phonemic awareness, phonics, word recognition strategies, comprehension, and metalinguistic awareness. PREREQ: EDUC 321 or instructor’s permission.

EDUC 524: Assessing Literacy
Methods of assessment in literacy, Introduction to case study, formal and authentic measures of comprehension, vocabulary, study strategies, and writing. PREREQ: EDUC 519 or instructor’s permission.

EDUC 526: Remediation of Literacy Problems
Teaching strategies for remediating problems in literacy. Emphasis on planning, implementing, and evaluating approaches and materials. PREREQ: EDUC 524.

EDUC 632: Psychology of Literacy
Examination of the nature of symbolic systems within the literacy field from the perspective of contemporary psychological science. Topics include decoding, lexical access, referential representation, and metacognition.

EDUC 633: Language, Literacy, and Neurology
Theories and principles based on research in psycholinguistics and neurophysiology as related to literacy.

EDUC 634: Literacy: Multicultural Views
Theories and research in language acquisition and development across cultures including emphases on second language acquisition, dialects, and regionalisms affecting both oral and written codes.

EDUC 635: Clinical Methods in Literacy
Consulting, supervising, evaluating, writing case reports, and relating research and theories in literacy to clinical methods. May be repeated up to 6 credits. PREREQ: EDUC 524, EDUC 526, and EDUC 633.

Integrative Field Research Studies:
EDUC 650: Thesis
OR
EDUC 673: Seminar in Literacy Education
Examination of research and current issues in Literacy Education. Seminar format requires active participation in readings, discussions, written assignments, and presentations. PREREQ: EDUC 635.
